Following are highlights of institutional review board (IRB) updates. For full details, see the spring 2025 updates document.

  • This new decision tree can be used to determine whether a project meets the federal definition of human subjects research and is need of review by the IRB.
  • A revised Application for Determination of Exemption form streamlines the review process and enhances guidance for student researchers.
  • Studies approved through an expedited review process will no longer require annual renewal; however, changes to studies or unexpected events must still be reported.
  • Active studies that were approved before implementation of the IRBManager system must be resubmitted. These “historical studies” will undergo review and reapproval using IRBManager.
  • Faculty advisors must be present at meetings that student researchers have with the HAP office and IRB when protocols submitted do not meet standards.

Register for an information session and Q&A regarding these updates on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m.
