PI Update from ORSP
Limited Submission opportunity for an NIH planning grant due March 25th 5 PM March 13, 2013

Dear Faculty,

The NIH (National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities NIMHD is the lead) has released a funding opportunity for building infrastructure at institutions such as ours that have been awarded below a threshold of NIH research grants in the past 3 years.

SF State is eligible for this one-time one-year planning grant opportunity - the BUILD Initiative; see
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-13-001.html. Only one application is allowed per institution, therefore ORSP's Limited Submission policy will be followed
(/orsp/files/assets/policylibrary/_docs/Limitedsubmissionpolicy.pdf)

A key sentence from this Funding Opportunity from the NIH is as follows:

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative.

The proposal to ORSP must be within NIH-fundable topics (biomedical and behavioral/social sciences relating to health).

Note that the one-year budget cap is $150,000 direct costs (indirect costs are added on). Later, we expect that the NIMHD will offer funding for follow-ons to the BUILD planning grantees.

Please note that the NIH encourages partnerships with other institutions. This should be part of your description.

All other details are in the RFA.
